Abstract
Speech communication is an essential part of our daily life. It plays a critical role in personal development and education. Spoken language technologies (SLT) constitute a major area of today’s Artificial Intelligence. In addition to the commonly known speech-to-text and text-to-speech functions, SLT can be used to extract and infer a wide range of non-verbal information from natural human speech. In this seminar, we will give an overview on the functions and performance of state-of-the-art SLT, focusing specifically on Cantonese. This will be followed by example studies that demonstrate the potential benefits of SLT in education and related areas.

Tan Lee is a Professor at Department of Electronic Engineering of CUHK. He is the Associate Dean for Education in CUHK Faculty of Engineering and the Dean of Students of the SHHO College. Tan Lee has been working on speech and language research since 1990s. He is specialized in technologies related to the Cantonese dialect. Tan Lee’s works are featured by in-depth and substantive collaboration across a wide spectrum of disciplines, including linguistics, medicine, psychology, and education.
