This talk explores the historical evolution of Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIED) andexamines the transformative impact of generative AI. The first part traces AIED’s progress over recent decades, highlighting key technological milestones and the educational practices that have benefited most from AI integration. The second part discusses the promises and challenges of generative AI, including large language models. These technologies offer new possibilities for learning design, automated feedback, and content generation, but they also raise concerns related to ethics, pedagogy, and long-term consequences. I will discuss the balance between thepotential of GenAI and its limitations, advocating for a sensible, human-centric approach to its adoption. Examples from ongoing projects at LNU will reinforce these ideas, fostering athoughtful discussion on the responsible integration of AI into education. Ultimately, this talk aims to inspire a balanced perspective, combining optimism with critical reflection on the future of AI in education.
