Seminar 1: Innovative Assessment and Assessment for Learning
(11:00 am – 12:00 pm)
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Singapore has undertaken a sweeping implementation of blended learning and one-device-per-student settings across schools. This seminar, providing a researcher’s viewpoint, explores the opportunities and challenges within this educational shift. Leveraging a decade of seamless learning research, our outcomes serve as crucial resources, shaping the nationwide initiative. We delve into the intricate interplay between seamless and blended learning, highlighting conceptual overlaps and distinctive features. The lens of seamless learning, central to our research, transforms blended learning practices, intertwining teaching, learning, and assessment for novel educational possibilities.
Seminar 2: Teaching, Supervising and Providing Academic Advising to Students from Diverse Cultural Backgrounds
(2:30 pm – 3:30 pm)
As higher education institutions operate within a globalised marketplace for students and higher degree research students, the admission of culturally and linguistically diverse students requires a culturally responsive approach to teaching and supervision. In this session, I will argue for the need to adapt our approaches, underpinned by sociocultural consciousness and diversity awareness. I will present a framework that highlights our dispositions, knowledge, and skills in using students’ characteristics, experience, perspectives, and cultural backgrounds to inform the effectiveness of our teaching and supervision practices. I will conclude by offering some strategies on how to implement a culturally responsive higher degree research students’ supervision.
